What is the difference between learning and studying?

Learning is the brain accepting new knowledge. Studying is when you’re going over that new knowledge to help you get a better understanding. Also learning is a way of trying new things such as doing something you never did before. Or taking on something you thought you couldn’t achieve. Studying is a way to help you retain information and keep that inforinformation fresh. By studying the knowledge you learned you can reach someone else so they can learn something new.

Would you study harder to make an A on a test or would you teach it to a class?

I personally would rather to study harder to make an A on a test because even though you studied really hard you can get an answer or two wrong. Now if I was to teach it to a class and get something wrong, I would feel bad for giving out the wrong information and I can’t correct myself because I don’t know it or forgot it.

Arts & Science Response

Poetry are short stories that you can learn a lot from someone. After attending an Arts & Science presentation about poetry, you realize people come from different walks of life. This presentation started off with Dr. Pat MacEnulty reading from her book “The Pink House”, the book is when she worked in a jail and she shares the story of one the inmates she worked with. I like the fact she tells the story of others when society doesn’t give them a chance to. Another speaker, Alana Sherrill, spoke about poetry from her book which revolved around her family. She spoke of the good and bad life events she’s experienced. She also read a poem about her grandfather’s death which can be hard for some people, instead she made light of the situation. Third presenter was professor Howard Slutzky, who presented poems from his college years. I didn’t think people kept up with their writings from years ago. His poems were based on various topics such as love and the environment. The poem about environment is really weird because he wrote it years ago and since then the environment has gotten worse, and doesn’t seem to be getting better anytime soon. The title of the poem was “Suicide” and we really killing the earth and ourselves by polluting and not recycling. The last presenter was a special guest, John Amen, who is known in the Charlotte area. He travels the country going to different schools and establishments doing reading of his poems. Like professor Sherrill his poems were about family but instead he made light of his family. Amen said “If you have dysfunctional family embrace it.” Some of his poems were a little off the wall but very enjoyable and relatable. Nobody has a perfect family but we all embrace who we were put on this Earth with.

Response to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Clementine has red hair and a graphic t-shirt, probably representing she’s a wild and outgoing person. Bright colors represent a vivid imagination. On the other hand, Joel is wearing dark colors, monotone colors and that seems to represent he’s not so outgoing as Clementine. He seems to be laid back and the opposite of her. The dolls on the couch represent the personality of each other, the skeleton body represents Clementine and how she feels about the relationship. And the other doll a comedian shows Joel is trying to make light of the situation. The lighting in his scene shows the mutual energy they have, and the close up on Joel’s face expresses he doesn’t want to be in that conversation. The little boy jumping in the rain expresses what made Joel happy as a kid. In this scene the director wanted to evoke the feeling of being a kid again. The director wanted us to see Joel as a kid again because it’s to cause the feeling of being truly happy. The yo-yo in this scene symbolizes that whatever he let’s go will always come back. The little boy under the table is Joel when he was 4, and Clementine was Ms. Helman representing which signifies a child together. Little Joel was upset when nobody paid him any attention expressing that he was alone and ignored. Clementine actually being an adult and she is showing her that she can be responsible. I don’t understand this movie. I don’t know what to write, I don’t know what to right. Clementine showing Joel her crotch is representing that he’s not trying to let go of her sexually. I honestly don’t know what the overall theme is for this scene, I really don’t.

The type of feeling this light gives is protection like nobody can hurt them while they’re under the cover. The close up camera shots are to give a clear representation of how they feel and what they went through. The reason for blurring the doll is to discrete the actuality of  how she really feels. Her favorite doll is an ugly girl doll named Clementine, no coincidence. She has low self-esteem. Through the lighting and the dialogue, he’s communicating that anybody who has low self- esteem is not alone. The lighting changes from dim to dark. The bright light shows it really coming to an end with him and Clementine. The message being communicated throughout these scenes was forever.

Response to Ex- Machina

The reason the director had Nathan dressed in black and white is to show he’s the creator, he’s in charge. For example doctors, dentist, and nurses wear white coats most of the time. The black pants represent how he doesn’t care, he’s emotionless. The white walls represent pure and the faces on the wall were previous experiences. The gray and black Ava is made of proves she’s unbreakable. Ava touching the previous faces might convey that she wasn’t the only one being locked up and told what to do. I’m sure after seeing and touching those faces are going to make her really upset. The way the director zoomed in on Ava’s face is to show how shocked she is to see someone like her but on a wall. The reason Keyoko is blurred out is because she knows what’s going on. Ava tilts her head a little when looking at Keyoko to determine if she’s an android or not. The way Ava is looking at Keyoko is as if she knows she can help her escape. I believe Ava just told Keyoko that there’s a way out and not to be scared. The director zoomed in on the mouth of Keyoko and half of Ava’s face is to show they might finally be connecting and understanding each other. The two hands coming together shows union. Keyoko might’ve been jealous of Ava and Connor’s relationship, that’s probably why she has the knife to destroy Ava and try to have what Ava and Connor had but instead Keyoko and Connor. Being that Nathan is at one end of the hall and the girls at the other show they weren’t really close. When Nathan walks out he stops as if he can’t believe what he sayings. He’s looking like they’ve turned against him. When Nathan tells Ava to go to her room Ava is looking at him like boy you got me fucked up. Nathan is at the tip of the red carpet, the red carpet could suggest danger to the other androids. Little does Nathan know his power is about to end as Ava defies him.The way director shot this scene was to show even though Nathan had treated then like toys and told them what to do, Keyoko has to do what’s right for her and to free the other androids. Maybe the director used sounds of suspense to get viewers to think there’s a plot twist.Eve though Ava and Keyoko and Ava never really spoke to each other, they both had the same feelings toward their creator and came up with a plan to dethrone him from his power. Nathan knocking Keyoko’s jaw off just looks like a piece of metal flying through the air. After looking at this scene the power dynamics between humans and robots show that artificial intelligence will always have the higher power. The scene when Ava is shown holding something that was all along her freedom. She just wanted her freedom and she got that, whether she had to kill to get it. After looking at this scene the director wanted to communicate that artificial intelligence will always have the upper hand. And just because he created her don’t mean she couldn’t develop a mind of her own. The big idea of this movie that was to be understood would be power.

The Walking Dead Season 1, Episode 1

Acting and Editing

The acting so far is okay, it’s just two officers in the car talking. And it’s not really much editing going on in the beginning. The lighting is very bright as if they’re the spotlight.Costume design for the officers is very simple, they look like they belong back in 1990. The high-speed chase looks like something you would actually see in real life, not a movie set. When one of the officers got shot it didn’t seem too real, but when he got shot the second time that seemed real. The special effects for blood could have been better. Listening to the way they talk, they speak with a southern accent soI’mm assuming this is taking place in the south. When the officer is in the hospital and he was hallucinating about seeing his partner, that was good editing because I too thought he was in the room. When the cop started feeling the dead flowers he then looked at clocked, that caused for speculation. When the officer got out the bed, his body dropped to the floor as if he was too weak to stand. The way his body dropped seemed so natural and not over dramatic like most actors seem to do. Even though he was in pain, he didn’t start screaming and yelling as if he was dying. Also, the sound in this is giving a lot more feel as to what the viewers are feeling. The sound will have you trying to figure out what about to happen next. The zombie on the ground next to the bike didn’t really look like a zombie, it looked more like a mummy as if its been there for years as the disease just recently started to kill people. The way the screened faded to a complete black scream as if we passed out right along with the officer. That was a clever idea. The set design so far is very simple, it’s nothing too complicated as though it just seems to be just places. I feel as though the little boy was being dramatic with his crying, I’m guessing that was his mother by the way he reacted but he knew that his loud cry could have them discovered. Now all the zombies are starting to actually look the part, even though they’re dead inside; they’re also alive but the special effects on their face show they’re still somewhat alive and not completely dead. The officer who shot one of the deputies who turned zombie seemed so real. That shot in the head was so graphic from the splatter of the blood to the dropping of the body was life like. The wife of the survivor doesn’t really look like much a zombie, she looks sick more than anything. The officer is acting in his normal daily agenda, he being so calm about the whole situation. As we continue to go through this episode there’s still minor editing. The officers uniform is so neat and crisp as if nothing happened.  There’s a lot of zooming in and panning out in this episode. There’s a horse on a family’s land and he sees it as his only mean of transportation to get gas. The set design for the city being deserted is kind of bright. In most movies when a tragedy happens, it tends to stay dark throughout the whole movie or scene. In this case, this episode shows day and night of the tragedy going on. The shot that happened in the army truck had a slight time delay of the blood splatter. The ending showed a sign of hope, the officer didn’t expect to hear from anybody but he did. And the way the camera zoomed in on his face shows a  facial expression of relief. After all this the director wanted the viewers to walk away communicating that the idea of this series is going to be about strategising.

Opening Sequence of the Terminator 2

The director started with the busy highway to impose rush hour. The lights bouncing off the cars represent something is about to happen. Cameron’s point in showing the congested highway, then transferring to an intercity with crowded crosswalks, and then the kids on the playground is to show the order of impact that the disaster is going to happen. The sound seems as if something horrible is about to happen. We here the little girl’s laugh but can’t see her face. Directors choice of fading into a white blank screen provokes that the story begins after the blank screen. I also believe that the little girl is the center of the story. After the blank screen disappears, there’s a scene with a skeleton sitting in what seems to be a disintegrated car. The car has cobwebs as if this happened years ago. The director shows the highway scene again but destroyed. What was once a busy highway is now still. Also, the playground that was seen earlier is now destroyed. The skulls on the ground represent the impacted people and how many people were swept from across the way. The way the director emphasizes the foot crushing the skull is the way the camera zoomed in on the skull and the sound. As the robot stepped on the skull the sound got much louder and echoed. The directors choice of angling the camera upward from a downward position is to make it seem as if we were looking up with the robot and see what it sees. Sound being used is a loud, very echoing sound. In my opinion the sounds like lasers in a game. Being that the world is being taken over by robots and its looks of a thousand old graveyard, it’s a pretty detailed set design. Based on the ongoing scene the war seems very deadly. Once the camera is on John Connor the sound/music changes from the sound of lasers to a relaxing mellow that goes with Sarah Connor story. The purpose of zooming in on Connor’s face and then an exploding background shows his emotion toward the war, angry. The theme of this sequence that James Cameron tried to communicate was destruction.

Opening Sequence of Walking Dead

The director chose to open with crossroads to show they have options. In my opinion the trees could represent protection. Also the director could’ve showed the crossroads to represent the different paths. In the second frame a car is flipped over as the police drives down the street. The flipped over car represents a tragedy. Another vehicle is flipped over and nobody’s around. The director could be leading us into the story or how the story begins. In this frame the officer is carrying a red gas tank as if he’s upset. This case the officer could be burning the undamaged cars. The look on officers face doesn’t show concern because he’s so calm. Emotion wise, in this frame is concern. The set communicates lifeless as all the cars in one area as if everybody got out their cars and just left the face of the earth. The colors red and black symbolizes wrong, the black on the car represents death and the red cooler represents blood since the population is gone. There’s a pink tricycle that I’m guessing belonged to a little girl. The reason they chose this prop was to get sympathy from the audience, to have people wonder where the girl is. A baby doll and a stroller appear to be in the background showcasing that majority of the children are gone. This frame is set up to show the way they had to live before extinction, the people in the car shows how they tried to survive. The tree shows knives as if they were aiming to make sure whatever they was aiming at was dead. This red gas station shows it was a town favorite. The pumps 1 and 2 represent the first two stages of human extinction. The significance of the officer recognizing sound shows he realize its not just him. Cameras zoom in on the officer face to show his awareness. The way the director shot this frame was to realize that there was somebody there. In this frame a little girl goes to pick up her teddy bear. The teddy bear matches her slipper and robe which indicates it was early in the morning and she didn’t plan on being in this much fear to start her day. First words said in this film was the officer stating who he is. He states who he is because he know the little girl could attack him thinking he’s a zombie. The camera zooms in on the little girl face to show her actual identity. Reasoning for the director ending on officers face is the fact he realize his life will now be dedicated to protecting himself and surviving. All the elements in the opening scene led to this event, how? The placement, the repetition of the color red, the little girl toy. The theme in this opening communicates suspense.

What I struggle with the most about analyzing images are…

I struggle the most when it comes details and feelings. In my head I could be describing it to the “T”, but when others read it doesn’t seem to have much detail. Or when the professor states there’s no right or wrong answer and then say it need more details. I just feel as though I’m not a strong writer in general. I know for a fact my vocabulary is really basic and needs to be expanded. Also, I lack the proper way to explain what I need to say; my diction could definitely be improved.

Mary Ellen Mark

The first thing that drew my attention was the little girl smoking obviously. She had on lipstick, acrylic nails,  and makeup. The little girl in the back looks very sad, the reasoning for putting the little girl front and center is to show that she needs help and guidance. her cousin in the back is looking why is this happening to us. The story could mean that they were abandoned or the parents didn’t really care. Smoking looks like its a normal thing for the girl, she looks completely normal like its her everyday life.  Maybe she posed for this picture to show and tell somebody she needs help. I know the little girl in the back wants help but she just keeps quiet. She could possibly be showing out cause her parents died and she has nowhere to go, again why this picture shouts for help and guidance.

Arko Datta

I feel as though the photographer centered the lady in the middle to grab our attention. The reason the photographer did that is because he/she wanted to showcase her deed of freedom. In my opinion, I think this lady is freed from her problems, the man’s arm showed to the left. Her hands are out as if she washed her hands of the bad/evil caused from this man. Even though she may seemed relieved she could be feeling remorseful as to why she looks like she screaming/crying while her head is down. She could also be asking for forgiveness and to help her get back to her normal self.

The first thing that caught my attention was the child. I believe the photographer positioned the child in front to show the story first. Being that the child is front and center and the bird being kind of distant, while everything is blurred out; the photographer depicted the child as strong. The bird in the back, in my opinion, is being represented as the child’s protector. Nothing else matters to the bird, hence as why the background is blurred out. He believes nature is the only way to go instead of being controlled.
